path to the present

What sparked my passion to create picture books?

as a young child . . .

I was awed by Garth Williams’ art.

as a young teen . . .
Maurice Sendak now was king as he brilliantly challenged the boundaries.
I read WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE while babysitting – and felt the passion of this child demanding 11 consecutive readings.

as a young adult . . .
On my own at 17, making picture books was my driving desire, but as I entered Parsons School of Design, internal struggle to imagine my real acceptance into this world – especially now being taught directly by Sendak – while my external struggle was to have enough money for a slice.

onward the road was scrabbled and winding . . .
Life and creative paths wandered, overlapped, entwined, wandered – BFA, other art and writing courses, education certification – as I was recruited to teach. As I raised a child. Later another.

the constants of my journey . . .
Internal ~ seeking acceptance, connection, family
External ~ literal survival
~ always the internal pulled me back to creating picture books in spaces found between the external demands of survival.

learning by default . . .
Many years of teaching: [Special Ed, Art, ESL]
I struggled to find freedom both outside of and within my hours in schools, to stay true to my creative soul, and share as much as I could with students. Picture books were one of the resources I often accessed to inspire, teach, shift minds and hearts. And when supplies lacked for my students in poor school systems, I created  illustrated readers with phonetic patterns and rhymes.

Teaching was an ongoing learning experience. Diversity of minds, learning styles, lives, cultures, egos, digging to find strategies to support learning and emotional easing for real individuals challenged in multitudes of ways, not one slot fits all.

other creative & “creation” experiences . . .

At one point, I was hired after hours by the school district to illustrate consumable materials.

Over various locales, I received commissions to create school and private murals, design for pubic arts projects, and to facilitate public grant art projects, narrative illustrative paintings.

along the way from near beginning to recent times, I also . . .
= helped start and run a food coop
= ran community arts center programs
= helped start dance communities for Swing Dance, Ecstatic Dance. Transformational Movement
= designed world music playlists for many groups…..

. . . while raising two children, mostly as a single mom.
